Fantastic service: Browser Shots

Now that I’ve finally updated my site to a new theme – more on that later – I had to check it with various browsers.

That’s when I realized that I had been using Browser Shots for way over ten years! It is such an awesome service. You submit your website URL, and they check it with up to 159 different setups. Insane! Of course, you can choose by operating system and / or browser. It is just so helpful when you need to do thorough checking.

Thanks for being around all this time, Browser Shots!

Here are some examples of the results.

BlogBackupr: Awesome!

There’s a new web 2.0 service in town: BlogBackupr! It’s, as the name tells, a blog backup service. For free, daily backups!

BlogBackupr

Currently, WordPress as well as Blogger.com are supported. All you need to do is register, put in the address of you blog and then give it the admin credentials, so it can perform backups. It’s still in the beta phase, and that has a good reason: Only text is backed up, not the theme, the plugins et cetera. But still, there are never enough backups, are there?

After registering, this is the first thing you see after logging in:

BlogBackupr Main Page

So the system understands what CMS you’re on and you can easily add more than one blog.

If you click on export, you can download the Backup as a WP RSS, normal RSS, Text or HTML file. Nice!

You can also view the backup posts:

BlogBackupr View Posts

All in all, BlogBackupr is a great service. It’s great that it saves all posts, but I guess in the future, when it will be able to do even more (backup templates, wp-content, plugins, comments, …), I would even be willing to pay for it.

Backups are always necessary (I got 3 different plugins backing up this blog) and the more, the better!

So don’t waste any more time and back up your blog now!

Spottt: Free Link Exchange.

Regular visitors don’t only know that I’m playing around a lot with the themes and CSS of this blog, they also probably spottted the new ad I’m running on the sidebar.

It’s a new service called “Spottt” (yes, three t’s) by the guys from AdBrite.

Let’s give it a try! They will, after they reviewed my blog, put ads from other blogs there. In return, my ad will show up on other blogs. It’s a bit like that BlogRush widget that is in my sidebar, too. Only smaller and hopefully with cool and funny advertisements.

In a couple of days we will see what kind of impact this has – I’ll keep an eye on my Google Analytics statistics to see how many new visitors it brings.

Perian: Awesome FLV QuickTime plugin.

Perian I just realized, while downloading the update for Perian 1.1, that I had never recommended it before: It calls itself the “swiss-army knife for QuickTime” and it has all the reasons to do so! Perian enables QuickTime application support for additional Media Types like FLV (used by YouTube) or HuffYUV, FFVHuff and other codecs you will never ever use in your entire life. But still, it opens Flash video in QuickTime and that is nowadays getting more and more important. So grab the newly updated Perian 1.1 here. Mac only, harrr.

osCommerce? I’ll wait for StoreSuite.

StoreSuite

I’ve been searching a lot around the net lately for a decent shopping system that is PHP/MySQL driven, and the best thing I found was osCommerce – so far. I noticed today that there is a new shopping CMS being developed at Intersprire which is called StoreSuite. The biggest problem is that it isn’t finished yet. But from what I can read on their blog, it’s gonna have a lot more features than any other system. AJAX, easy design adjusting, and a whole lot of other stuff. Have a look at this great shopping cart software. They say it will be released in Q4 2007 – Can’t wait to get my hands on it. Until I can install it, I will follow the development of this piece on the official development blog. I pray it will work in Germany…
